I believe that writing has made me reflect more. And it has definitely made me think more about mortality.
Unfortunately I was introduced to loved ones dying at far too young an age, but there is no rule book on when someone is born and when someone dies. This week I discovered another primary school friend passed over. That is five gone from my old class photograph now. She was a lovely kid, and I hurt for her family. You see, when I remember them I don’t see the people in their late fifties/ sixty. I see the ten year old kids in the picture. Those kids never grow old in my mind. So when I day dream I don’t see my Mum and Dad suffering in pain. I see them as young people from the above photograph. I see them as people in love, full of dreams and hope. The people I actually never knew in reality.
In some respects I quite like my unusually wired mind, that remembers every small detail from days gone by. I still see the school kids playing “the big ship sails” or “the farmers in his den”. I still hear the laughter and the chants of “who wants to play cops and robbers?”.
So now when people or pets move on I place them in the eternal photograph album in my mind, and see only a smiling face.
